Keynote speaker Greg Tyrrell presents a talk on the first Atlantic crossing by a drone

On Saturday 6th September Currawong’s employees, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders gathered to celebrate Currawong’s 20 year milestone. Guests were treated to a fascinating keynote address by Greg Tyrrell from the Australian Association for Uncrewed Systems reflecting on Aerosonde / Insitu’s first Atlantic Crossing by a Drone in 1998. At the time Greg was the Operations Manager at Aerosonde and Gavin had recently joined the organisation. To boost the chance of success, four Aerosondes were launched. Communications were via a UHF and the Aerosonde flew out of range after just one hour of flight. After much anticipation, 26 hours and 45 minutes later one of the Aerosonde vehicles landed on Scottish soil (a total distance of 3270 kilometres).

When reflecting on the milestone CEO and Founder Gavin Brett commented “although it doesn’t seem like 20 years since Currawong began under my house, we have been able to create a range of world class products. I feel a deep gratitude towards all of Currawong employees who have helped us to reach this position. In particular I acknowledge the contribution made by our long term employees including Oliver (16 years), Jason (15 years), Tristan (11 years), Darren (10 years) and Richard (almost 10 years).”
